Jesus wept.
John 11:35
Since Jesus had all power and authority from His Father, and could heal the sick, give sight to the blind, and raise the dead, have you ever wondered why then he wept here?
Lazarus had been dead for four days. Jesus had traveled quickly to get to his dear friend, and some that had made that trip with Him blamed Him, including even Lazarus' sisters, who wanted to know why it took so long to arrive, their expectations so high, feeling that Jesus could have saved Lazarus, saved them from their grief, saved them from doubting the ability of the Messiah to heal their gravely ill brother, that came as a result.
Jesus is one hundred percent God, and one percent man, and as a man who loved his friends greatly, the pain and loss, even knowing that Lazarus would soon be brought back, brought him grief also, and so he wept right along with the others.
Death can be compared to night, when the tears come, but our Bible tells us that joy comes in the morning-as a new day, life renewed and resurrected, and come it did, as Jesus called Lazarus by name, crushing death, despair, and doubt.
What joy must've come as the group looked on incredulously as a risen and restored Lazarus answered the call of the Creator, and what conviction must've come over the hearts of the doubters! One thing I am certain of: never again did Mary and Martha, ever doubt the Lord, never could they leave His presence, recognizing Him for all that He is and deserves.
