"After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, "Listen to Me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear." When he had left the crowd and entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable. And He *said to them, "Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him, because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated?" ( Thus He declared all foods clean.) And He was saying, "That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man." Mark 7:14-23
"The heart is more deceitful than all else
And is desperately sick;
Who can understand it? "I, the LORD, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give to each man according to his ways,
According to the results of his deeds.
Jeremiah 17:9, 10
"Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me."
Psalm 51:10
"How can a young man keep his way pure?
By living according to your word.
I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.
I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:9-11
Our hearts, when left to their own devices, are degenerate and desperately wicked. The heart be design craves be filled with something, and if it is not filled with the spirit of the light of men, then it will be filled with darkness, depravity, and evil.
The scriptures read, "in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word IS God..." (John 1:1-2)...the prescription for fullness comes in Psalm 119, as the writer declares, "I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you."
It is Jesus Himself (embodied in the Word) that we need to fill our hearts with, it is only Jesus and God the Spirit, that creates the pure hearts we all desperately crave, desire and need.
The "fertilizer, water, and light" that is necessary to grow rooted and grounded to mature the fruits of the spirit, only comes through Him!
