" 1 Why do the nations conspire
and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the LORD and against his anointed, saying,
3 “Let us break their chains
and throw off their shackles.”
4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs;
the Lord scoffs at them.
5 He rebukes them in his anger
and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,
6 “I have installed my king
on Zion, my holy mountain.”
7 I will proclaim the LORD’s decree:
He said to me, “You are my son;
today I have become your father.
8 Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance,
the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You will break them with a rod of iron,
you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”
10 Therefore, you kings, be wise;
be warned, you rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear
and celebrate his rule with trembling.
12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry
and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him."
Psalm 2
Rulers and kings, including our current president, often revel in what they perceive as their own power, exalting themselves, never realizing the Lord and Master is the one who molds and shapes-everything. Even Nebuchadnezzar, the most powerful ruler on the earth in that day was unwittingly used by a God he never even knew of.
We live a country so intent on separating church and state, on trying to keep the Alpha and Omega, the Shoreless Ocean, Maker of heaven and earth, in a little corner - like that's really possible! In the First Continental Congress, Benjamin Franklin said, "This I know: God governs in the affairs of men". Christians are living stones- we are the Church, and we are to be led by the Holy Spirit. This is His world- every atom of it was brought into existence from nothing by just His word. The Lord calls us His "sons and daughters", and He if we ask He will make even the nations our inheritance (v.8)...let us ask, even right now, for our ruler's hearts to change, to desire to serve God with fear, and rule with trembling. Jesus will be exalted, one way or another, and it's His desire to see the nations lifting Him up, kissing the Son, and making the nation the object of the Lord's goodness, instead of His wrath.
