“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
Matthew 6:22, 23
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16
The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
Psalm 27:1
"In him was life, and that life was the light of men. "
John 1:4
"This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine..."
My 7 year old daughter asked me, "Abba, what is the difference between light and darkness?"
I answered her that the definition of darkness is the absence of light... That light overcomes darkness, when the flame is lit, the light switch turned on, or as the sun comes up, the sunlight streams in and the darkness flees. As I talked to her about this natural phenomenon the Holy Spirit was speaking to me about the spiritual implications.
Darkness never overcomes the light- ever. You can see one candle flame burning from quite a distance, and think about a scene like a stadium, where thousands are holding their own lights. Darkness comes when the light is put out, turned off.
Do you get what I'm driving at here?
There is something about our fallen nature, the "natural man", that loves darkness, but then there is the spiritual (inner)man in us, that no matter how suppressed, desperately craves the light...the struggle that even the Apostle Paul battled with (Romans 6,7).
But just like a dark room requires a decision to flip on the light switch, we must also make that decision, the choice to "turn on the light", tear down those black out drapes, and let the Son stream in.
Turn that light on, and if it's already on, Praise the Lord, and keep it burning!
